For years, large doses of niacin have been used as effective
agents to lower cholesterol and triglycerides. With a dosage of 2000-3000 mg
niacin per day, a 20-25% reduction in cholesterol is expected. The problem,
however, are side effects: blushing, digestive problems and deterioration in
diabetes. According to one study, hepatitis occurred in 8 of 15 patients on
niacin tablets with slow absorption (this did not occur in one patient on
normal niacin). People taking niacin should be supervised by a doctor and
should have liver function tests and blood sugar levels, similar to cholesterol
and triglyceride levels. Therefore, I recommend using niacin only as a last
resort, and only under medical supervision.
